Rebecca Webster Rimel was born in 1951 in Charlottesville, Virginia. She has one brother. She took her bachelor's (nursing) and master's (MBA) degrees from the University of Virginia. For several years she worked in neurosurgery at the University of Virginia, where she did research on minor head injuries. In 1983 she joined the Pew Charitable Trusts.
